The Challenge
As the Kalasatama neighborhood in Helsinki rapidly develops into a dense, waterfront urban neighbourhood with thousands of new residents. Existing recreational infrastructure and outdoor fitness equipment were outdated and struggled to keep pace with the growing demand for accessible outdoor activity spaces. Part of a major urban redevelopment project focused on smart, sustainable living and a high quality of life, the fast-growing Kalasatama neighborhood lacked sufficient multifunctional outdoor gym equipment wtih adjustable weights.
The Solution
To meet the growing demand for outdoor exercise in the area, the City of Helsinki decided to install a large Omnigym outdoor gym within Mustikkamaa Sports Park as part of the sport parks broader renewal and development. Among Helsinki’s many outdoor gyms, this is the largest, and also the largest Omnigym installation in Finland. The outdoor gym features 20 Omnigym machines with adjustable weights and a total of 25 pieces of Omnigym outdoor gym equipment. The facility serves as a functional outdoor training area for strength and outdoor workouts.
It’s perfect for us to do a short training session while we’re out for a walk around the island.

Out of all the gyms in Helsinki, I like this one the most. Training outdoors here is great.

The Omnigym outdoor gym fullfills the demand for free, accessible outdoor training infrastructure for the growing Kalasatama neighborhood, while complementing existing recreational trails and amenities on Mustikkamaa, a popular green urban recreation destination. Connected to Kalasatama by a pedestrian bridge, the nearby Mustikkamaa recreational island is an ideal location for outdoor training close to home. including paired machines to accommodate more users. The outdoor gym has proven very popular, maintaining strong usage even during the winter months.
Due to the overwhelming popularity of Helsinki’s Omnigym outdoor gyms, residents have requested additional neighborhood outdoor gyms through the Omastadi initiative. Located near urban green and blue spaces, these gyms are easily accessible by walking or cycling, promoting physical activity and active lifestyles. The city aims to ensure that every resident can reach an outdoor gym within a 15-minute bike ride and eventually within walking distance, making outdoor training accessible to all. Helsinki’s citywide Omnigym outdoor gym network is impressive and provides a model for other European active cities.
