MEETING THE DEMAND

The Challenge

There is a clear need for accessible public spaces that support physical activity and outdoor strength training in Bangkok. Benchakitti Park, located near the city’s central business district, already offers a wide range of free recreational activities and attracts high visitor numbers. However, dedicated outdoor strength training equipment with adjustable weights has been limited.

The Solution

To encourage more people in Bangkok to be active and make physical activity more accessible, Omnigym outdoor gym equipment was installed. It is part of the “Benchakitti Park for Better Health” initiative, led by the Danish Embassy in Thailand, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and Novo Nordisk. The new outdoor gym offers free and accessible training for everyone, free of charge.

THE OUTCOME

Accessible outdoor training in Bangkok

Benchakitti Park is a popular destination for both local residents and visitors. Once a tobacco factory, it has been transformed into a public park that offers a wide range of free recreational activities. The former factory halls host various community and sports activities, making the park an active and inclusive public space for people of all ages and fitness levels. Within this setting, Omnigym provides an attractive and accessible strength training option for everyone, regardless of experience. With the outdoor gym being openly available, it makes strength training more accessible for all. The outdoor gym equipment fits naturally into the park’s existing activity offering. It supports both planned workouts and spontaneous visits, encouraging more people to engage in strength training during their time in the park. Benchakitti Sports Park is inspired by Spor10, an active urban space in Copenhagen, Denmark where Omnigym outdoor gym equipment is also installed outside the buildings. Both are examples of urban transformation projects that integrate former infrastructure into modern recreational and active public use.

Built on the site of a former tobacco factory, it has been redeveloped into a major green space that integrates recreation, nature, and climate-adaptive landscape design. The park features wetlands, forested areas, and extensive walking and cycling paths. Repurposed industrial buildings within the site provide spaces for sports and recreational activities. The park also contributes to urban flood management and biodiversity enhancement, making it an important example of modern, nature-based urban development in Bangkok.
