Outdoor Training Matches the Gym – Scientifically Proven
A scientific study conducted by the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä confirmed that Omnigym's outdoor gym equipment – designed in collaboration with the David fitness brand – delivers training results comparable to traditional indoor gym machines.
The study focused on two key strength exercises: the squat and the bench press. Muscle activation, force output, and fatigue were analyzed and compared to similar exercises performed on Smith machines found in indoor gyms. The findings were clear: Omnigym’s equipment supports both biomechanical accuracy and physiological development, meeting the demands of serious strength training.
Emeritus Professor Keijo Häkkinen, who led the research, concluded that Omnigym's outdoor machines are highly suitable for building strength and muscle mass for both fitness enthusiasts and athletes. The study also highlighted Omnigym’s patented adjustable resistance and biomechanically optimized movement patterns, which ensure a safe and effective workout for users of all fitness levels.
“These results validate our uncompromising approach to product design. We’ve always aimed to deliver an exceptional training experience – one that keeps people coming back,” says Sami Kaivola, Omnigym’s COO.
“As a conclusion of the study, it can be said that these outdoor fitness equipment, according to their biomechanical requirements and the physiological responses, can be used for training of maximal strength and muscle hypertrophy for recreational and athletic purposes.”

Happy Senior Project –
Strength and Social Connection for Older Adults
In 2023, Omnigym partnered with Linnaeus University and the municipality of Mörbylånga in Sweden for the Happy Senior project, aimed at evaluating the health impacts of strength training on individuals over 65.
The 18-week randomized controlled study explored both physical and psychosocial effects of training at an Omnigym outdoor gym. Participants engaged in one to two sessions per week, guided by personal trainers and using individually tailored programs.
Key findings from the study:
- Increased strength and improved movement power
- Better balance and reduced movement insecurity
- Positive changes in attitude and motivation
- Strengthened social bonds and community engagement.
The outdoor gym quickly became a social hub where participants exercised, encouraged each other, and enjoyed coffee breaks together. The researchers observed that regular training enhanced participants’ well-being, mobility, and quality of life.
“Yes, I do think that I have become stronger. My goal is to continue training at the outdoor gym,” said Birgitta, 76, one of the participants.
These promising results support the use of outdoor strength training as a powerful tool to promote active aging. The full research findings will be published in summer 2025.
